Upcycle Your Kid’s Imagination | DIY Spoon Puppets

DIY Spoon Puppet

Listening to a story is any child’s favourite activity. Enacting story with soft toys/figure toys is also their favourite me- time game. But if they have their own DIY spoon puppets to enact stories, it would be a dream come true.

So here are some simple and quick ways to make your own stick puppets, again using leftover disposable plastic spoons and forks from your last house party. Some old gift wrappers, scraps of colourful chart papers, ribbons and daily essentials like earbuds, makeup wipes should do wonders to give special touch to your puppets.

Let your kid imagine and create their very own DIY spoon puppets with minimum home supplies and recycling old stuff into a new one.

DIY Spoon Puppet I – Rabbit 

DIY Spoon Puppet

Supplies

  • White disposable spoons
  • Round disposable face/makeup wipes
  • Glue
  • Black marker
  • Scraps of white paper
  • Any coloured ribbon

Step 1 Draw and cut rabbit ears as shown in the picture.

Step 2 Guide (assist) your child to stick face wipes back to back on spoon stick as shown in picture. Now stick rabbit ears behind spoon as shown in picture.

Step 3 Assist your child to draw rabbit’s features as shown in the picture.

Step 4 Tie a tiny bow around rabbit’s neck. Your rabbit spoon puppet is ready.

DIY Spoon Puppet 2 – Rooster / Hen

Supplies

  • White disposable spoons
  • Round disposable face/makeup wipes
  • Glue
  • Black marker
  • Red and white paper scraps
  • Yellow kite paper

Step 1 Draw and cut rooster/hen wings with white paper as shown in the picture. Draw and cut beak and crown/comb of rooster and hen with red paper as shown in the picture.

Step 2 Help your child stick all the pieces as shown in the picture.

Step 3 Make features of rooster’s/hen’s face using black marker as shown in the picture.

Step 4 For variation cut two small yellow kite paper squares. Now stick this on spoon as shown in the picture. Stick the beak and comb of hen. Make features using black marker.

DIY Spoon Puppet 3 – Butterfly

Supplies

  • Assorted colour chart papers or printed paper or paper gift wrappers
  • Coloured spoons
  • Craft straw cleaners
  • Black marker
  • Glue
  • Stickers (optional)

Step 1 Draw and cut colourful butterfly wings from your choice of papers.

Step 2 Stick it behind spoon as shown in the picture. Cut required length of straw cleaner to make butterfly’s antenna. If you don’t have straw cleaner, then draw and cut antenna shapes on black paper and stick it.

Step 3 Draw features of butterfly with black marker and tiny colourful paper dots as shown in the picture.

Step 4 As a variation, make butterfly wings with plain coloured paper and let your child decorate Butterfly wings with tiny colourful paper dots or stickers.

DIY Spoon Puppet 4 – Flower

Supplies

  • White disposable forks
  • Paints
  • Green paper scraps
  • Glue

Step 1 Paint spikes of fork with colourful paints. Paint stem part with green paint.

Step 2 Draw and cut a leaf shape from green chart paper. Stick on the stem as shown in the picture. Your flower puppets are ready.

DIY Spoon Puppet 5 – More Animals

Supplies

  • Colourful spoons
  • Assorted colour chart papers
  • Glue
  • Black marker

Step 1 To make any animal puppet, draw and cut body part and ears as shown in the pictures with coordinated coloured paper. Take colour coordinated spoons; if don’t have coloured spoons, paint white spoons to required animal skin colours.

Step 2  Stick the body part and ears cut outs on spoons. Add tiny uneven paper cut outs as per animal skin. For example, black or brown patches for cow, brown spots for giraffe, brown mane for lion and black stripes for tiger and zebra.

Step 3 Add required features on face with black marker.

DIY Spoon Puppet

DIY Spoon Puppet 6 – Human figures 

Supplies

  • Assorted colour chart papers
  • White disposable spoons
  • Glue
  • Black marker
  • Printed papers or old magazine cut outs
  • Wool

Step 1 Draw and cut to measurement required clothes cut outs for human figure puppets.

Step 2 Stick clothes cut outs on spoon. Paint the spoon for required face colour.

Step 3 Add required features on face with black marker as shown in the picture.

Step 4 Stick wool cut outs to make hair.

Step 5 Use your own imagination to create required story characters! For example, use crown cut outs for kings, queens and princes, cape cut outs for superheroes,  red hood dress cut out for Red Riding Hood, long woollen hair for Rapunzel and butterfly-shaped wings for fairies.
