The story

Mom follows the life of high school teacher, Devki Sabarwal (Sridevi) and her husband, Anand (Adnan Siddiqui) living in Delhi. Arya (Sajal Ali) is Anand’s teenage daughter from his first wife and she doesn’t accept Devki as her mother. Their world comes crashing down when Arya is brutally, physically assaulted by a bunch of guys. During the legal battle against the perpetrators, they fail to accumulate appropriate evidence, leading to the accused walking out scot-free. That’s when Devki decides to take matters in her own hands with the help of private detective Daya Shankar Kapoor (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) and inspector Mathew Francis (Akshaye Khanna). Mom film review

As you may have already guessed, this is yet another revenge thriller that seems to be similar to many other films we might have seen before. However, Mom does manage to impress with its strong narrative and stellar performances.

Very aptly, set against the backdrop of the “rape capital”, the film is an eye opener to the atrocities against women in society. The gut wrenching beginning will leave you appalled and angry, because it is indeed the sad reality. Reflecting on the mindset of the common man, the movie is a hard hitting reminder of the fact that we definitely need to do something NOW!

Debut director Ravi Udyawar beautifully captures the nuances of the strained mother-daughter relationship. He handles the sensitive subject of rape with utmost care and has shot every scene aesthetically. The first half of the film will keep you glued to the screen and on the edge of your seat. Although there are several cinematic liberties and loopholes in the script, the overall storytelling makes it an interesting watch. Mom film review

The second half gets a tad boring with an unnecessary song that comes right in the middle of nowhere, declining the built up suspense. With a few twists and an overly dramatic climax, the film left me with mixed feelings.

The idea behind revenge is so complex and contradictory that one doesn’t know where to draw the line. While one may argue, two wrongs don’t make a right; it is indirectly a slap-on-the-face to how our judicial system functions.

The Talent

Coming to performances, Sridevi knocks it out of the park! The credibility she brings to her character is impeccable. She expresses every emotion, dialogue and action perfectly. You just can’t take your eyes off her when she comes on screen.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui steals the thunder yet again. Playing the sharp and unconventional detective, he manages to entertain with his peculiar mannerisms. Mom film review

Akshaye Khanna impresses in whatever little role he had to play. Adnan Siddiqui, Sajal Ali and the villain played by Abhimanyu Singh are gripping in their scenes.

Despite its dark subject, Mom is not just a hard hitting reminder of the world we live in, but is extremely relevant and riveting.

Supriya Says

You SHOULD watch Mom with or without your mom this weekend!
