A Slice of Kerala in Goregaon

Buy traditional Kerala handicrafts at Tulsi Textorium in Goregaon west

Among the array of stores outside Vasant galaxy Apartments in Bangur Nagar and this one store will make you stop.

Tulsi Textorium, run by a Nair family, is a quaint little half-store. Here you can feast your mall-sored eyes on several traditional Kerala handicrafts.

Find cotton mundus, Kasavu half-sarees, brass lamps (nilavilakku) and urlis of several sizes, temple ornamental jewellery and Kerala sarees. There are some cute Pattu Pavadai sets for little girls too.

A Pure Passion for Kerala Handicrafts

Ms. Thulasy Ramdas Nair, founder of this tiny Kerala handicrafts store, started it out of pure passion. A native of Kerala herself, she wanted to bring a slice of it to Mumbai. ‘Our clientele is most of the non-Keralite crowd’, Ms Nair’s son, Sunil, tells me. ‘Those who like authentic handicrafts and appreciate the art forms of Kerala, come here often to buy sarees and curios’, he shares.

What’s Attractive at Tulsi Textorium

The Kathakali dancer masks, of course! Vibrant colours, vivid eye expressions – immediately inspire a love for traditional Indian crafts.

Urlis and Nilavilakkus if you have the patience or manpower to keep them shiny all year round!

The temple jewellery is definitely eye-catching. Well finished full sets, earrings and other ornaments made of 1 gram of gold would be elegant purchases.

And the sarees! Reams of ivory Kerala cotton breathe life into you at first sight… Tulsi Textorium has some beauties that are combined with Kalamkari borders. Definitely eye-catching! ,
