Best Vacation Reads: Author’s Pick

vacation reads

Are you an avid reader and are travelling soon? Be sure to look at this list of best vacation reads. Best-selling author and Goregaon resident, Anjali Kirpalani gives us her choice of books to bag.

Anjali Kirpalani

Anjali Kirpalani is a young, author of the novels Never Say Never and Written in the Stars. She is also a screenplay writer and Youtuber. Her channel, Neither Left Nor Right media, targets relevant social issues through humour.

Born in India, Anjali lived in South Africa for eight years before returning to Mumbai. She has written several successful radio dramas for the SABC (South African Broadcasting Corporation).

While studying at the University of KwaZulu Natal in South Africa, Anjali received the opportunity to be an exchange student for a semester at the University of Guelph in Canada, an opportunity she will always cherish.
19 Till I Die is her ode to the best year of her life.

Over to Anjali…

Lying on a beach chair, the sound of the waves and a good book in hand. Bliss! It’s the season for summer holidays and if you’re off somewhere exotic, boy do I envy you. (P.S. I went for my beach holiday in March but you can never have too many holidays now, can you?) When I’m packing my bags for a holiday, one of my essentials is a good book (or two or five!) So here’s my list of vacation reads for this summer:

  1. Anybody out there? by Marian Keyes

Marian Keyes has been a favorite ever since I discovered her books in college. While I recommend most of her earlier work such as Sushi for Beginners, Last Chance Saloon and Rachel’s Holiday.

Anybody out there? stands out as a book that deals beautifully with loss while also making you laugh. Marian gives chick-lit a good name! Her writing style is tongue-in-cheek and laugh-out-loud funny and I’d recommend this book for a fun holiday read.

  1. Bossypants by Tina Fey

Tina Fey is hilarious and in a world dominated by male comedians, she’s created her own space. In Bossypants she shares stories from her life, how she made it as a comedian and stories from the sets of Saturday Night Live.

She also shares hilarious stories from her personal life and her witty observations as a mother. In this autobiographical comedy, Tina kicks ass but happily shares her flaws. Unwind with this book on a holiday and you won’t regret it.

  1. 19 till I Die by Anjali Kirpalani

I had to include my own book in this list! In all honesty, readers have gotten back to me (many of them with pictures of the book on a beach) saying they’ve read the book while on holiday and thoroughly enjoyed the light read.

The novel is about four nineteen-year-olds from different cities who meet at a University in Canada. It’s a witty, coming of age tale about relationships, finding yourself, growing up, love, heartbreak and most importantly friendship.  The book is nostalgic and is sure to remind you of your carefree college days.

  1. Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty

Now a major TV series, Big Little Lies is unputdownable. The lives of three women intersect when their children attend kindergarten together. The book hilariously brings forth politics in the playground.

This book is an amalgamation of fun, light reading along with serious social issues and a murder mystery. It’s got all the elements you need to make it a page turner. If you haven’t watched the show, all the more reason to read the book, as the book is better than the show, in my opinion.

  1. The Perils of Being Moderately Famous by Soha Ali Khan

There are a spate of autobiographical books by Bollywood personalities that have been published recently. I’ve read most of them and I enjoyed Soha’s book the most. Soha writes with self-deprecating humor and the honesty with which she writes comes through her work.

She shares stories about her college, her love for travel and of course quitting her corporate career for one in Bollywood. It’s a breezy read that gives you an insight into the lives of the rich and famous but from one who openly admits to being from a privileged background.
